California Doctor Convicted in Overdose Deaths of 3 Patients

A Los Angeles-area doctor was convicted Friday of second-degree murder in the deaths of three patients who overdosed on painkillers she prescribed.

The prosecution of Dr. Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng was a rare murder case against a physician at a time when prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic and lawmakers have tried to make it harder for so-called pill mills to easily dole out medications with little scrutiny.

Cross River Government Suspends Perm. Secs. Over Suspension of Morning Devotion in Schools

The Cross River State government has indefinitely suspended the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Education Anne Odey, who last week released a statement suspending all forms of morning devotion in schools across the country.

Spring Valley High School Students Stage Walkout in Support of Fired South Carolina Officer

Hundreds of students at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina, black and white, staged a walkout on Friday in support of school resource officer Ben Fields, the deputy who was fired after being caught on video flipping a student out of her desk.
Principal Jeff Temoney confronted students after they convened in the school’s atrium and told them their voices were heard no one would be “suspended,” but they needed to return to class.
“We’ve heard your voices, OK? We appreciate you taking time to do this, but again, as you know, we always focus on teaching and learning, so let’s head on back to class,” he said.

A criminal investigation has now been launched against the airline. 2 black boxes have been recovered. 5 Teenagers Arrested For in-Traffic Armed Robbery in Lagos

The Lagos state police Rapid Response Squad have arrested five in-traffic robbers who specialized in snatching handsets and bags from unsuspecting members of public in traffic. The suspects identified as Ajala Lateef 16, Salami Sodiq, 15, Raji Kazeem, 19, Bashiru Adeyemi, 19, and Ikechukwu Ukueje, 15, were arrested on Wednesday October 28th after they had successfully robbed their victim of her belongings.

The Political thieves in Nigeria are walking around without being jail. Yet a common citizen on the street is sentenced with ease. Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday convicted seven men to 84 years imprisonment for illegal and unlawful dealing in 1,459 metric tonnes of petrol. The court sentenced each of the convicts to a jail term of 12 years each starting Friday after they were all found guilty of the five count charge preferred against them.
The convicts are; Adedamola Ogungbayi; Olaniran Olabode; Suraju Gasali; Moses Emmanuel; Wilson Bonsi; Okaraodi Uche and Onyeogo Happy. Apart from the jail term, Justice Abang also  ordered the forfeiture of the vessel, ‘MT Good Success’, used by the convicts in stealing the said petroleum product, as well as the recovered petroleum product to the Federal Government.

Breaking: Russian Plane with 224 Passengers Onboard Crashes over Sinai, Egypt

A Kogalymavia passenger plane carrying 224 people has crashed in Egypt's Sinai penunsula. The airliner took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik this morning, and was heading for Russia, according to aviation sources, when it disappeared from radar. It's believed the plane was mainly carrying Russian tourists.

The plane was carrying 212 passengers and 7 crew members. 17 of the passengers are children.
Airbus A321 left Sharm-El-Sheikh for St. Petersburg with flight number 7K9268. It belongs to airline Metrojet and was 18.5 years old and was descending with about 6000 feet per minute just before signal was lost. The captain told ATC after departure of a technical fault and requested a route change. 

Local media says a recovery team is now at the site of the crash.

Man Jailed for Forwarding Text Message Containing a Joke about Pres. Mugabe to Neighbours

A 38-year-old Zimbabwean man named Titus Maposa has been jailed for forwarding a joke on Mugabe to all his neighbours. According to Manica Post newspaper, Maposa's neighbours sent the text message to the police and he was arrested.

The offending joke was a message falsely attributed to Ecocash, Zimbabwe's mobile money transfer scheme, which said the president had deposited $1 500 (R20 745) into their account.

Court of Appeal Upholds Election of Jonah Jang as Senator Representing Plateau North Senatorial Zone

The Court of Appeal sitting in Jos today, upheld the election of Jonah Jang as Senator representing Plateau north senatorial zone. The court dismissed a petition filed by the APC and its candidate, Eunice Sambo who were not satisfied with the outcome of the election tribunal, and headed to the Appeal Court to oppose it's decision. As the petitioner could not tender substantiate exhibits, the Judge dismissed the case.

Man Arraigned for Attacking Friend with Cutlass and Stealing his N800K

The Lagos state police command, yesterday arraigned one Omumgwa Loveday, an Aba based businessman, before a magistrate court over allegations that he attacked his friend, 32 year old Chiwendu Sunday with cutlass and stole his N800, 000 at a hotel on Osolo way in Ajao estate Lagos.

According to P.M. News, the accused and the victim are businessmen and bosom friends from Aba and had come to Lagos to purchase a bus for the victim, Sunday. When they arrived Lagos, they lodged in the same hotel.

20Year Old Girl Arrested by Cross River State Police for Selling Her 2 Week Old Baby for N20k

Maria Ekanem sold her two week old baby to an Abuja-based woman for N20,000. According to a report by Vanguard, the 20-year-old school drop out from Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, was arrested by the police along with her accomplices.

Female soldiers serving at Guantanamo Bay are not being allowed to transport inmates following a court order issued in response to prisoners who complained on religious grounds, according to US Republican senators who recently returned from a visit to the prison camp.
Inmates apparently complained that female soldiers' actions were an insult to their Islamic faith, but the senators blasted the court's decision as an "insult to women."

The Cross Rivers state government has ordered the suspension of early morning devotions held in primary and secondary schools across the state. A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education in the state, Anne Odey, stated that the decision to suspend the devotion came from security concerns raised by the state Commissioner of Police, Henry Fadairo.

Finally Court of Appeal Dismisses Saraki's Appeal

The Abuja division of the court of Appeal has dismissed the appeal filed by senate president, Bukola Saraki challenging his trial by the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The appeal court dismissed all 5 issues raised by Saraki in the appeal. Two of the three panel of judges ruled that his appeal lacks merit. This implies that the Code of Conduct will still go ahead with Saraki's trial.

Saraki is being tried on a 13 count charge of false asset declaration when he was Kwara state governor. He is expected to appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on November 5th.

Four Fake Soldiers Apprenended in Lagos

Four fake soldiers identified as John Izunwanne, 25, John Otu, 23, Richard Acha, 22, and Simon Anthony, 39, who were arrested at various times along Mile 2 road, Idi-Araba and Agege area in Lagos state, were paraded by the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni at the force headquarters in Ikeja yesterday October 29th.

When interrogated, one of the suspects, 39 year old Simon Anthony, said he decided to wear the military uniform to secure free transportation from his base in Adamawa to Lagos state.

Lamar is 'walking with help now,' according to a report in UsWeekly. 'Lamar is getting better every day,' a source told the magazine. 'He is more coherent and can talk more.'

He has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit. 'He is doing very well and continues to be a fighter. He hasn't given up once, and this will really help him in the future,' said a friend.
